The Canada Revenue Agency took down its online services, including electronic filing of taxes when they discovered some of their servers are affected with the security vulnerability.

CRA

“At this time, we are not aware that any personal information has been affected. However, we continue to assess and remedy the situation. We are working to bring our online services back up as soon as possible. Updates will be ‎posted as they become available.”

April 30,2017 is the last date for filing taxes for the year 2016. Canadians can still fill out forms electronically, but they may have to wait for tax filing until website becomes fully operational.

The Government of Canada is also promoting the month of March as the fraud prevention month.

CRA Fraud Prevention

At the time of writing, we were still not able to login or access our online CRA account. There is still not ETA when services will be back online. CRA will update through social channels whenever the services will be back online.

Update: CRA has restored all the services today at 5:00PM and now you can file your return.

In the last 48 hours, the CRA has worked around the clock with other government departments to implement a solution to address the vulnerability. We are now confident that the solution has been rigorously and successfully tested and services returned online.

AWS Lightsail is the latest product in the Amazon’s Web services portfolio. It is targeted for users looking for low-cost and reliable VPS. The services starting from just $5/month, users can fire up the VPS server in very less time without any complexity of the set ups going in the background.

With the launch of Lightsail Amazon is targeting Digital Ocean users or other similar VPS providers. Moreover, Lightsail plans are similar to the Digital Ocean plans, plus they are offering the first month free on their basic plan. Though, there are many other competitive VPS provider’s like Digital Ocean, Linode which offer simple VPS solutions for novice users and on other side AWS is known for its superior support and reliability. Many fortune companies rely on AWS for their services and there is no doubt that Lightsail will become more stable, secured and competitive in future.

  • Migrating WordPress website to Lightsail:

Now lets know how we can migrate WordPress blog in easy way from current host to Amazon Lightsail. I assume you have an account with AWS if not you can create your account and after verification you’ll land on below page.

Create LightSail Instance

After you land on the above page in the screenshot, click on create an instance and then select WordPress under Apps + OS. Right now Lightsail offers ten pre-configured applications & stacks like WordPress, Joomla, Magento, Node.Js, Drupal, etc. or you can select two Operating systems either Ubuntu or Amazon Linux. Lightsail has five pre-defined bundles that include compute, storage, memory and bandwidth. You just need to select according to your requirement and you’re ready to go.

  • Select pre-configured App or Stack:

Wordpress Instance Image

  • Select Lightsail Monthly Plan

AWS Lightsail is currently available only at one location, i.e North Virginia with five availability zones. Select the plan and any zone out of five, choose a name for your instance and click create. All Lightsail plans come with Static IP address, SSH terminal access, DNS management, SSH key management, Server monitoring, web based management console and Access to AWS services.

Select LightSail Plan and Instance Zone

  • Get WordPress Admin Password

It will take less than five minutes to set up the server and after that you can easily login to a WordPress blog. Click on 3 dots and then click on connect to launch SSH to know the WordPress admin password.

Launch SSH

It will launch SSH terminal when you click connect where you just have typed below:

cat bitnami_application_password

And it will show your password, though it is recommended to change your password after login. To access to WordPress website you need to use the VPS IP, in my case it is 54.237.198.30.

Wordpress Admin Password

Enter https://(VPS IP)/wp-admin in browser URL, here ‘VPS IP’ will be your public VPS IP so in my case login URL was http://54.237.198.30/wp-admin.

  • Set up DNS Records:

Now at this stage your Lightsail hosted site will work partially as you’ve not configured DNS records. It will only be accessible via public IP. You can perform this step later as well. Go to Lightsail Homepage > click on Create Other Resources > Select DNS Zone.

Create LightSail DNS Zone

After you select DNS Zone, type your current domain name and click create DNS Zone.

DNS Zone

On the next page enter A, CNAME, MX and TXT records of your domain. You can get the same details from your current domain registrar account.

Lightsail DNS records

At last, update all records correctly in a Lightsail DNS Zone. Now just copy the name server records generated and update the name servers with your domain registrar. It may take up to 24-48 hours to propagate name servers globally.

  • Import/Export Files

Though, it’s just importing and exporting of files, but taking backup of your site is not a bad idea. Once you login to WordPress admin panel go to plugins. Look for All-in-One WP Migration by Servmask and activate it, it comes pre-installed with WordPress installation on Lightsail(Please update the plugin if update is available). Now login to your current WordPress host and install the same plugin. After installing and activating go to export option and click on ‘EXPORT TO’ where you will see different options like File, FTP, Dropbox etc. where all other options are paid except ‘FILE’ option. Select file option and it will archive the all files in a single file. Download that file by clicking Download button.

Migrate WordPress Website

Now before you import the downloaded file, please use the same Permalinks settings as you were using on your current host. Now go back to WordPress installed on Lightsail and click on import option under All-in-One WP migration. Follow the same process, Click on Import From > File > Select Downloaded File and viola, site import is complete.

So far during my test performance was good and which can be enhanced by using Memcached or Redis cache. Though I’m in North America and ping/response time was good as servers are in North Virginia, but it may vary according to your location. So please check response time according to your location.

Equifax and TransUnion are the only two credit bureau agencies in Canada that provide credit reports for the Canadian residents. No doubt both provide free credit reports (not credit score) if requested in written by post. At the same time if you want to check the score you may need to pay some money to get the latest credit score.

There are already companies in Canada like Borrowell, Mogo, etc., which provide a free credit score but all those fetch credit score from Equifax. So there is possibility that you could have different credit score with other credit bureau. Now the American company Credit Karma has launched its services in Canada and provide free Credit Score from TransUnion. In U.S.A, Credit Karma provides credit score from both Credit Bureau’s and I expect they will provide same in Canada in coming time.

Why to get credit score from Credit Karma?

Credit Karma

The process is very easy from entering your details up to getting Credit Score. In order to verify your details they ask few security questions from your credit file to fetch your details. The best thing I liked about the Credit Karma while checking my score that it doesn’t only provide the score unlike Borrowell but also provide the details like open/closed credit accounts. Moreover, you can check your updated score after a week not only 4 times a year as in case of Borrowell.

Credit Accounts

The best thing I liked about that it provides you almost similar report what you can get by paying at TransUnion. You can also check which accounts still revolving on your credit file as well as closed accounts with their details.

Credit Account DetailsAt Credit Karma you can also check the credit inquiries made on your file or if your account sent to collections due to any behind schedule payment. It really helps to see that which creditors pulled your TransUnion report instead of Equifax. No doubt Credit Karma is still in beta stage in Canada and they will definitely be going to launch more services here in Canada like Mortgages, Credit Card offers, etc. So, if you’re concerned about your financial health, it’s not a bad idea to check your credit score for free at Credit Karma.

Opera Browser VPNOpera Software has released Opera browser with inbuilt VPN (Virtual Private Network). The beauty about this feature is that you don’t need any special account to use it. Once enabled from settings (Settings (Preferences on Mac) > Privacy & Security > toggle on free VPN) you can turn it on or off with just one click.

“If more people knew how the internet truly works, they would use a VPN – and we hope that by making our browser VPN free and easy to use, it will become an essential tool for everyone.” said Krystian Kolondra, SVP Global Engineering, Opera for computers.

Krystian also mentioned that more than 70% people are aware about the VPN but they don’t use it because of complexity or they are not willing to pay for subscription fees.

Opera Browser VPN SpeedTest

VPN services are provided by SurfEasy Inc., the same company which Opera acquired last year. Opera lets you choose five different server locations around the world. The best thing I liked about this VPN service is that there was almost negligible drop in the speed. I was able to stream 1080p videos on YouTube without any issue. There was little drop of speed when I selected manually virtual location. I would recommend to go with Optimal location option as Opera select the optimal server-based on network speed, latency and location.

Free No Log VPN for Android or iOS

I’m not sure how Opera browser VPN will work for those who want to access Netflix content across borders. Moreover, On other side I’m sure it should work fine for those who are concerned with their privacy and security. The VPN provides you log free encrypted connection with up to 256 bit AES level of encryption.

Except all this Opera 40 features video pop-out, the built-in newsreader, a battery saving mode, and Chromecast support.

Tangerine Money Back no-fee credit card was launched last year on 6th October as a preview. At that time only a few Canadians were selected to use this Master Card. Tangerine Master Card is now in the market for almost a year, It was launched early this year for everyone. The best thing about this card is that it’s No-Fee credit card and you can get up to 4% money back on up to 3 different categories.

Most of the Canadians already know about this Credit card as it is very popular in Canada because of its features, but this review is for those who don’t know about it yet or who are thinking to apply for it.

When I came to Canada (in 2013) as a Student, my first Credit Card was Scotia Bank Scene Visa Card and it was fine for me during my college days as you get free movies with scene points you collect. Scene Visa only gives you 1 point for $1 you spend and technically it comes out to 1% rewards only. But as soon as my Study was completed my privilege for free bank account was also over and at that time I switched to Tangerine No-fee Chequing account and closed everything with Scotia as I’ll be getting same extra benefits from Tangerine Bank as it is owned by The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotia Bank).

Best No-Fee Bank Account for Canadians

Why you should apply for Tangerine Master Card:

Maximum Return:

There is no doubt that Tangerine Master Card offers a lot of features absolutely without any fees. It’s been only 4 months I switched to Tangerine Master Card and I’ve already earned almost $160 as Money Back rewards into my account. Now some of you may be thinking that I’ve spent lot to earn this much of rewards and you’re right, but at same time if I were using some other credit card either I would have high annual fees on it or I would get very less or no rewards.Tangerine Master Card Rewards

Flexibility on Selection of Categories of Your Choice:

Now I was able to earn this much of rewards because Tangerine allows you to use the categories in which you think you’ll spend more. Tangerine is offering a special offer for first 3 months in which you can earn double cash back (up to 4%) rewards on your selected categories. Tangerine will automatically suggest your most spending categories and you can switch to them if you want or you can change the categories every 3 months.

No Limit on rewards:

There is no limit that how much you can earn as cash back rewards. Unlike other Credit Cards, even the Credit cards with Annual fees has some limits up to which you can earn rewards yearly.

No minimum limit on rewards redemption:

There is no limit on the redemption of rewards. The whatever amount you earn every month as rewards will be automatically deposited to your savings account (if you’ve a savings account with Tangerine) or will be adjusted towards your credit balance.

No Minimum Salary Requirement:

The great thing about this Master Card is that you need not to be earning $60,000 to apply for it. You just need to be a Canadian Resident with the age of majority in your province and should not have declared bankruptcies in last 7 years.

No issues so far:

I’d no issue so far in using this credit card except the first time when I used the credit using Chip method and the transaction went without any PIN authorization but I believe it synchronized or updated the PIN on the Card.

If above listed features still didn’t convince you to apply for a Tangerine Credit Card than this No-Fee Credit Card also offers extended warranty on the products you buy using this card. You’ll also get 90 days purchase assurance from the date of purchase which covers damage, loss or theft with coverage of up to $60,000 maximum. Moreover, it has only 1.5% foreign conversion fees on this card.

Addition to all above features you can also use this card with Apple Pay and it has all Master Card benefits like a Zero Liability and Tap & Go feature.

Most of us in our daily life use various software’s, tools, extensions or add-ons to improve our browsing experience. Nowadays, we have so many devices in our home’s that we can not install or it is not possible to install those tools on every device. From tools or software’s I mean Ad-Blocking add-ons or Parental control software’s, etc. All these tools do their task properly but some point you may have noticed that these tools may be consuming unnecessary memory or processing power making our computing devices slow.

Ad blockers

Here I’m going to share with you how you can protect your family or businesses from unwanted intruders, phishing websites, intrusive advertisement using one of the DNS service listed below.

For those who are not familiar with DNS(Domain Name System), we use DNS every time when we access any website over the internet. Every time you type address in the browser it queries for the IP assigned to it and so that you can browse the content from the web server. The process of converting name to its IP address is called Domain Name Resolution.

Without going into much technical detail with the help of DNS you can block advertisement’s, malware and phishing blocking, content filtering like blocking illegal or pornography websites. For this you’ve to change the DNS settings of your device or the router. By updating the DNS at router level, all devices connected to that router will get benefit. On the other side you can update it on single device as well such as on Children’s PC. The default DNS address provided by the service provider doesn’t provide any extra benefit except resolving the domain names.

Following are the few DNS services which are free and provide extra features without slowing your internet. Moreover, you don’t need to configure anything as these all are pre-configured.

Norton ConnectSafe

Norton ConnectSafe DNS owned by Symantec provides three pre-configured DNS which are free and can be used without creating any account. It can block inappropriate content from 23 different languages. It even corrects the most of URL typo errors.

Norton ConnectSafe

  • Security: This DNS provides basic protection against malware, phishing or scam sites and uses DNS address 199.85.126.10 & 199.85.127.10
  • Security + Pornography: This DNS blocks all sexually explicit material in addition to the security. It uses DNS 199.85.126.20 & 199.85.127.20
  • Security + Pornography + Other:  In addition to all above features it blocks websites with mature content, abortion, alcohol, crime, drugs, file sharing, gambling, hate, suicide, tobacco or violence. For it please use 199.85.126.30 & 199.85.127.30

Remember changing DNS setting will not replace the security features or protection provided by your Anti-virus software.

Alternate-DNS

Alternate-DNS blocks approximately all type ads making your browsing experience fast and smooth.  They also have premium dns service for $2.99 in which along with intrusive ads it also blocks pornography. To use Alternate-DNS, please update DNS address to 198.101.242.72  &  23.253.163.53

Comodo Secure DNS

Comodo Secure DNS

Comodo Secure DNS comes with Malware and Phishing detection. It will only block only phishing, scam and unsafe websites. If you’re looking for more control like kid safe content than I would recommend you Comodo Secure DNS 2.0. It’s still in beta but you can have more control and block content according to the category. The categories are divided into three groups Low, Medium and High. With selecting categories in group High it blocked almost every website so select group accordingly.

Please switch your DNS address to 8.26.56.26 and 8.20.247.20 to use Comodo Secure DNS.

Open DNS

Open DNS is much more popular among the users for it speed and reliability. It is now part of Cisco. By using OpenDNS name servers it will block pornography only, Other phishing or scam websites are accessible. You can change the DNS name servers to 208.67.222.123 & 208.67.220.123 to use OpenDNS

All above mentioned DNS name servers are free to use but speed may differ according to your location. You can check this guide to change the DNS in your PC or router.

Please let us know below in the comments which DNS you used or you need any help in configuring your device.

Opera has launched free VPN for Android and iOS. It is developed by the same Toronto based company SurfEasy that was acquired by Opera last year. Opera VPN comes with unlimited bandwidth and is easy to set up. You don’t need to sign up or need any subscription to use this app. Moreover, you can choose different virtual regions like Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Singapore and United States.

Opera VPN Easy Setup

Opera VPN let you browse internet safely without losing single penny from your wallet. It doesn’t block ads(as per my test) and just ad trackers only. Moreover you can check in the interface that how many tracker’s it blocked(upto last 30 days). You can also check the security of Wi-Fi with the inbuilt security test.

Opera VPN Security Score

My Overall experience with the speed was good while using the VPN. I was getting 15-25Mbps download and up to 35Mbps upload bandwidth while connected to nearest location. While testing it got hanged two times showing that you’re not connected to the internet while i was connected. Except that app interface is smooth and easy to understand. I hope those few hiccups are nothing over the features provided by Opera VPN and will be fixed in the next update.

Opera VPN Speed Test

Like SurfEasy VPN, Opera VPN no where claims that they don’t keep logs but they do have mentioned about encrypting the traffic. So you can use this VPN to unblock the websites and accessing the free WiFi in your favorite restaurant or at home safely without any compromise of speed. You can download it from the Play Store or App store for free.

Do you still use email services from Yahoo, Outlook, AOL or Microsoft Outlook but still unhappy with overall experience. So, it’s best time to switch to Gmail without losing your email, contacts and without missing any emails.

Most of us use Gmail especially Android users but there are many who still don’t use Gmail as their primary email account. The simple reason is that you’ve created your email account long time and don’t want to change or move to another. Second reason is that your all contacts has that email address and you think it will be difficult to update your new address to all. But I can assure you that you’re under more control while using Gmail as compared to other. With Gmail, you can keep your old account and forward all incoming email to your new Gmail account.

Best Spam Filter:

Believe me or not, Gmail has the best spam filter and it’s getting better with time. After switching to Gmail, I’m receiving way less spam in my inbox. No Non-English character emails or emails like you’ve won the lottery or someone has left the property for you.

Security Warnings:

Gmail warns you before like if there is phishing link in your email or is not sent by the authorized sender. It also warns you if someone has sent you some malware, virus with attachment. You should never open any attachment if you’re not expecting it or there is any warning regarding the attached file.

Unencrypted MessageGmail will also warns you if the message you’re sending or received is encrypted or not. In this case if lock sign is open, it means the message you received or you’re sending may not be fully encrypted and you should not send any confidential information.

Unsubscribe:

Unsubscribe

You can Unsubscribe most of the mailings from the email itself without visiting the actual page.

Reminders:

If you’re using Google Now on your Android phone or Inbox by Gmail, it can remind you about your bill due dates, travelling plans, meetings, reminders at the top and even you can set them as priority.

Inbox Tabs:

Inbox Tabs

You can also categorize your emails in different tabs for easy accessibility. By default it categorize into Primary, Social, Promotions and Updates. The nice thing about this categorization is that your inbox is less cluttered and you can access important emails easily.

Check your Credit Score free in Cananda

Google Docs

You can create Word Docs, Spreadsheets and presentation online at Google Docs. Moreover you can share and store them online in Google Drive. Google drive storage comes with 15GB space by default which is shared among all google services and in most cases normal users don’t need extra. Remember in case of Google Photos you can upload unlimited photos without worrying about space.

Except all those above features, you can do much more like Archive your email and check them later on. You can mark or star your important emails, label them with different colors. It has option to undo your email send within few seconds. Moreover, you can use Android/iOS apps and Inbox by Gmail for more better features.

If you are ready to switch from your current email provider to Gmail than please check the guide, how to switch webmail providers and that also without losing any emails.
